Instructions to receive Glider 0-flights

1. To sign-up, a cadet needs to be a current CAP member under the age of 18.

2. Cadets will use the form below or e-mail to contact the Maine Wing Project Officer providing: Name, CAP ID, home squadron, and contact information.

3. All participants must complete the Wing Runner Course and CAPs Aircraft Ground Handling training. Everyone must also be current in their Safety Education.

Note: The WPO will then provide the GCOE with the above information in addition to the syllabus number of the remaining glider orientation flights, and date of last ride for each cadet.

4. If an overnight stay is planned, cadets will be asked to complete a CAPF31

5. On the day of the O-flights Cadets shall bring their CAP ID (temporary is OK) and a pair of non-uniform shoes (BDU boots are prohibited in gliders). Uniform of the Day will be BDU.

Note: Transportation to the glider O-flights will be determined closer to the o-flight weekend and may include air transportation/powered O-flights.

There are two methods to becoming a glider pilot as a CAP member

1. CAP Flight Instruction - Student pilots require 30 hours of instruction before soloing in a CAP glider. A student pilot license is only required to solo. Written approval from the Wing Commander must be given before flight instruction can begin.Currently there are no CAP Glider Instructors nor gliders within Maine Wing.Any instrction will be done outside of Maine. Contact the Wing Project Officer to get in contact with a Glider Instructor within Northeast Region.

2. Glider Academy - Currently this is the easiest method for Maine Wing members to gain instruction in gliders. A member must attend 2 glider academies to solo. Graduates are encouraged to apply for flight scholarships through CAP to help complete their training and gain a Glider license.

The following criteria applies to all scholarships.  Additional criteria will be noted within the specifics of an individual scholarship description:

1. Be a current CAP member;

2. Have earned the Billy Mitchell Award or received a Senior Rating in any specialty track;

3. Possess and maintain an academic and discipline standard acceptable to the school;

4. Be enrolled in a full-time course of study during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded;

5. Have not received the scholarship in the past that you are applying for.

Only those members that have been selected for scholarships will need to provide official school transcripts and other supporting documents to validate the information that is provided in the application.

For up-to-date schedules for all CAP Glider Academies, see NSCA Website (use the "Select Name" pull-down menu to search for "Glider Center of Excellence" and also "Glider Flight Academy"). Cadets are responsible for their transportation.

Applying

• Minimum age for cadets is 14 by the start date of the activity;

• Applicants must have an encampment credit before they attend;

• All applications must have approval of their squadron and wing before being accepted at an academy

• NCSA application period is December 1 to January 15 each year

Getting Selected (Procedures and Timeline)

• NHQ process for awarding slots

• 15 March - All approved applicants will receive an automated email advising they have been selected as a Primary or an Alternate for an Academy.

• 15 April - Primary applicants will need to make a commitment to attend and to pay for their slot by 5:00 PM EST. Payment is made through a National Headquarters website (instructions given in acceptance letter). Slots not paid for by this time will be given to an Alternate applicant.

• 16 April - Alternate applicants are notified by email of the availability of a slot.

• 30 April - Alternate applicants will need to make a commitment to attend and to pay for their slot through the National Headquarters website by 5:00 PM EST on this day.

• 1 May - If slots remain unfilled any remaining applicants will be offered a slot, even if the opening was not one of their choices.

• 15 May - All slots for all 2013 Academies are finalized.

Attending an Academy

Students will be mailed a letter on May 15th with detailed information from the Activity Director.

First-time attendees             

• Must complete or have completed the required training courses (Click Here). Students must bring their Wing Runner course certificate to Glider Academy.

Returning attendees

• Must re-take and pass the Wing Runner course HERE before attending. Bring certificate with you.

• Must complete an FAA Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) at https://iacra.faa.gov/iacra/ prior to Glider Academy.

• Obtain a Student Pilot Certificate. No flight physical is needed. Contact the Portland Flight Standards District Office:  http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/field_offices/fsdo/pwm/contact/

• Bring two forms of identification, such as a CAP picture ID card, passport, or state issued driver's license or similar form of picture ID that shows your home address.
